Chimney Repairs and Leadwork in Leeds

Lead does a lot of quiet work on a roof. When a flashing lifts or a stack’s pointing goes, the leak usually shows up somewhere you don’t expect.

Chimneys on Leeds terraces

On a row of terraces or back-to-backs, chimney stacks are often shared and sit right on the party line. That makes the flashing, the back gutter and the flaunching at the top especially important, because a fault can let water into more than one house. We look at the whole stack, not just the side facing your loft.

Lead, done to suit the job

Lead is cut and dressed to the job, with laps, fixings and lengths that let it move with heat without tearing. Stepped flashings are chased into mortar joints, aprons are dressed down over the slates or tiles, and lead clips are used where wind can lift an edge. The photos show stepped flashings and a dormer apron finished this way.

Chimneys and lead: your questions

Why is water coming in around my chimney?

The usual causes are lifted or split lead flashing, a blocked back gutter behind the stack, cracked flaunching at the top, or tired pointing that lets rain soak into the brickwork. We check each and fix the actual cause.

Can lead flashing be repaired, or does it need replacing?

Small lifts can be re-dressed and re-fixed. Lead that's split, thinned or badly patched is better replaced, and it's usually not a big job.

My chimney is shared with next door. Can you still repair it?

Yes. Shared stacks are common on Leeds terraces. It's best if neighbours agree before work on a shared stack, and we can explain what's needed so you can talk it through.

Do you fit cowls and caps on unused chimneys?

Yes. Capping a disused flue keeps rain out while leaving some ventilation to stop damp building up inside the stack.

Do you take chimneys down?

We can take redundant stacks down below the roof line and slate or tile over, where that's appropriate. On listed buildings or in conservation areas, check with Leeds City Council first.
