What’s included

  • Slipped and missing slates refixed
  • Cracked and broken tiles replaced
  • Nail-fatigued slates re-secured
  • Ridge and hip tiles re-bedded or dry-fixed
  • Verge repairs
  • Leaks at chimneys and roof windows
  • Lead flashings, valleys and soakers
  • Underlay and batten repairs
  • Flat roof repairs
  • Wind and storm damage

Warning signs worth acting on

  • A damp patch or brown ring on a ceiling
  • Slate or tile pieces in the gutter or on the path
  • Daylight showing through in the loft
  • Wet timbers or drips after rain
  • Gaps or loose mortar along the ridge
  • Slates visibly out of line on a slope

Water getting past one slate soaks the batten beneath it first, then the rafter, then the ceiling. Catching it at the slate stage keeps the repair small. Leaving it through a Leeds winter can mean replacing timber as well.

We find where the water gets in

Where a stain shows up inside is rarely where the water gets in. On a slate roof it can run along the back of the slates and down a batten before it drops. On a terrace it can even come in at a shared chimney or valley and travel along. We look at the covering, valleys, flashings and ridge above and around the stain, so the repair goes in the right place first time.

Terrace and back-to-back repairs

A lot of the repairs we do in Leeds are on slate terrace roofs: slipped slates from rusted nails, cracked ridges, worn lead where the roof meets a chimney stack, and blocked or perished valleys between neighbouring roofs. Because those roofs are joined, we work carefully at the party line and let you know if we spot something on the adjoining slope that’s likely to affect yours.

Roof repairs: your questions

How much of the roof needs to be accessed for a repair?

Only what's needed to reach the fault safely. Some repairs can be done from ladders and a roof ladder, others need a tower or scaffold, particularly on three-storey terraces. We'll say which in the quote.

Can slipped slates be put back without replacing them?

Often, yes. Where the slate is sound but its nail has rusted through, it can be refixed with a slate hook or a lead tingle. Broken slates are replaced with matching ones.

Why does my roof only leak in certain weather?

Wind-driven rain from one direction can push water under a lifted slate, a gap at the verge or a loose flashing that stays dry in ordinary rain. Knowing when it leaks helps pin down where.

Can you repair a roof on a back-to-back or terrace?

Yes. Most of our Leeds repair work is on terraced roofs. We work carefully at the party line, shared chimneys and valleys so the repair doesn't cause a problem next door.

What should I do before you arrive?

Catch drips with a bucket, move valuables away and keep out from under any ceiling that's sagging. If water is near light fittings, switch that circuit off. Then call 0113 490 0270.
